George Weedon (1920-2017)

A memorial event was held Monday 27th March 2017 at Sheen Mount Primary School in West Temple Sheen, attended by friends and family and OLs who were taught by George Weedon during his time at the Lower School of John Lyon.

George was born in Richmond in 1920 and lived for 64 years in Rothesay Avenue in East Sheen. Sheen Mount Primary School had been the primary school for his three sons (OLs) and his daughter. So George had been very much part of the community, as was illustrated by the very moving tributes made by various neighbours.

The organisers were delighted to received messages and memories from Old Lyonians along with various photographs which formed part of a large display of George's antics, including several of George on top of roofs and up a very tall ash tree when in his 90's.

Tributes were paid by family and friends, including one from an Australian Gymnastic Coach Janis Bosiger who had met George whilst coaching his grandson who lived in Australia.

A display of balance by world champion gymnasts Lewis Walker and Kitty Williams represented the respect with which British Gymastics remember "Gorgeus George" and his achievements.

In later years George was the subject of a short film called 'Walk Tall' made by Kate Sullivan. The showing of the film provided a fitting conclusion to the formal proceedings.
